SECTION 4 - COURSE DETAILS

OXSS University Preparation Courses aim to give you a head-start in your first year as an undergraduate.

  • Academic Preparation
    • You will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and be introduced to material you will be studying in your first year. In addition, the academic preparation aims to inform you of the pace and level at which you will be expected to study when you start university.
  • The Essential Skills of Learning
    • In group sessions you will be introduced to the different ways you will be expected to learn at university. Topics include: preparing for lectures and effective note taking; making the most of seminars; how to get the most from a tutorial. Sessions will also focus on what to do if you feel you are falling behind and what you should do if your course isn't right for you.
  • Surviving University
    • For many students, the first term at university will be the first time you have lived independently away from home. To help you manage this transition, sessions are available on planning your finances, managing your time, how to eat well and how to avoid common problems that new undergraduates often encounter.
  • Mentoring
    • Each student will be assigned a student-mentor, someone studying a similar course at a similar university. Student mentors will be available for one-to-one informal sessions (and available on an on-going basis for advice and support by e-mail during term-time).
